Abby Gilleland Named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week

Gilleland posted a match-high 36 assists in Saturday's win at No. 8 Oregon

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University sophomore setter Abby Gilleland has earned the first MAC East Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career, the league office announced Monday.

Gilleland was named the Oregon Classic Most Valuable Player after leading Ohio to a 3-0 record and unblemished 9-0 set record in Eugene, Ore., this past weekend. The Bobcats received 82 votes in Monday's AVCA Division I Coaches Poll, ranking Ohio No. 27 in the nation.

Gilleland averaged 10.22 assists/set while also contributing 1.3 kills/set, 1.8 points/set and 2.0 digs/set during the three matches of the Oregon Classic. In the opener against Bryant on Aug. 30, the Bull Valley, Ill., native notched a match-high 29 assists while adding four kills on five attempts (.800) and five digs.

Against Eastern Washington on Aug. 31, the preseason All-MAC selection led all participants with 27 assists while adding two service aces, three kills and five digs. In the tournament championship match against eighth-ranked Oregon, Gilleland played her best match of 2013, posting a season-best 36 assists (12.0/set) to go along with five kills on 14 attempts (.357), eight digs, two service aces and a block assist.

Ohio makes its home debut this weekend with a trio of matches in the Baymont Inn Invitational. The `Cats open with Cincinnati (0-4) on Friday at noon before matching up with No. 24 North Carolina (3-0) later that night at 7 p.m. Ohio wraps up the tourney with a match against Dayton on Saturday at 3 p.m.
