ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio University sophomore setter Abby Gilleland was recognized for her outstanding achievements both on the court and in the classroom Wednesday, as the Bull Valley, Ill., native was named the MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Gilleland was named the Oregon Classic Most Valuable Player after leading Ohio to a 3-0 record and unblemished 9-0 set record in Eugene, Ore., this past weekend. On Monday, she garnered MAC East Offensive Player of the Week accolades.
Gilleland is majoring in nursing and has put together an impressive 3.812 cumulative GPA during her career in Athens.
This past weekend in Eugene, Gilleland averaged 10.22 assists/set while also contributing 1.3 kills/set, 1.8 points/set and 2.0 digs/set over the three-match event. In the opener against Bryant on Aug. 30, Gilleland notched a match-high 29 assists while adding four kills on five attempts (.800) and five digs.
Against Eastern Washington on Aug. 31, the preseason All-MAC selection led all participants with 27 assists while adding two service aces, three kills and five digs.
In the tournament championship match against eighth-ranked Oregon, Gilleland played her best match of 2013, posting a season-best 36 assists (12.0/set) to go along with five kills on 14 attempts (.357), eight digs, two service aces and a block assist.
Ohio makes its home debut this weekend with a trio of matches in the Baymont Inn Invitational. The `Cats open with Cincinnati (0-4) on Friday at noon before matching up with No. 24 North Carolina (3-0) later that night at 7 p.m. Ohio wraps up the tourney with a match against Dayton on Saturday at 3 p.m.
