ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio University freshman outside hitter Katie Horton has been named the MAC East Division Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Horton was named WKU Invitational MVP after hitting .382 and posting at least 10 kills in all three matches while leading Ohio to the tournament title and a 3-0 record this past weekend. The Westland, Mich., native averaged 2.8 kills/set and 3.0 points/set on the weekend while also contributing nine digs and three total blocks.
Horton led off the weekend with a career-high 11 kills against UNLV while hitting at a team-high .500 clip. Against No. 21 Western Kentucky Saturday, Horton added 10 kills, three digs and a block while hitting .286 to lead Ohio to a 3-0 win. It marked the first sweep of WKU on its home floor by an opponent since the 2010 season.
In the tournament finale vs. ACC foe Virginia, Horton hit .409 while contributing 10 kills, five digs and a solo block to help clinch the WKU title for the Bobcats.
This season, Horton ranks second on Ohio in kills (79) and kills/set (2.55) and is third in total blocks (18) and blocks/set (0.58).
Horton and the No. 24 Ohio University volleyball team (8-1) return to action this weekend at the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. The ‘Cats face Maryland (1 p.m.) and Marshall (5:30 p.m.) on Friday before battling No. 10 Michigan on Saturday at 7 p.m.
