CLEVELAND, Ohio â The Ohio Womenâs basketball team was selected to finish first in the Mid-American Conference East Division in the 2016-17 Womenâs Basketball Coaches Preseason Poll, collecting nine out of 12 first place votes. Senior guard Quiera Lampkins was also named to the Preseason All-MAC East Team, in a vote of the leagueâs 12 coaches, the conference announced today.
Under fourth-year coach Bob Boldon, the Bobcats collected nine out of 12 first place votes to finish first in the MAC East Division, followed by Buffalo, Akron, Bowling Green, Miami and Kent State.
Central Michigan was unanimously selected to win the MAC West Division, followed by Ball State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan.
Central Michigan was selected to win the regular season title, earning six votes, while Ohio was selected to finish second with five first-place votes. CMU was also selected to win this seasonâs tournament title, earning seven first-place votes with Ohio picked second with four first-place votes.
This is the second time Lampkins has been named to the Preseason All-MAC East Team. Last season, Lampkins averaged 14.8 points and five rebounds a game. Lampkins registered a .438 field goal percentage while dishing out 124 assists on the year. The Gahanna, Ohio native was named the 2016 MAC Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-MAC Second Team and the MAC All-Defensive team.
Last season the Bobcats finished 26-7 and repeated as MAC regular season champions. Ohio also made it to the WNIT Round of 16, defeating Marshall and Virginia Tech for the Bobcatsâ first-ever postseason victories.
The reigning MAC regular season champions return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 when the Bobcats take on Thomas More in an exhibition game. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. in the Convocation Center. The regular season will tip off Sunday, Nov. 13 when the Bobcats head to High Point to take on the Panthers. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
