ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team is set to travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to start Mid-American Conference competition for the 2017-18 season at Alumni Arena on Saturday (Nov. 25).
REWINDING LAST WEEK
Ohio finished in seventh place in the 40th annual Navy Classic with 69 points on the day. Junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) would finish second in the 133-class. Kelly also finished second in last year's tournament as a sophomore. This year, Kelly started the day with a win by fall in 1:44 over George Mason's Trevor Mello. In the next round, Kelly would post an 18-2 technical fall win in 2:56 over Brown's Zeke Salvo. In the quarterfinals match, Kelly would earn a 4-7 win by decision over No. 22 Purdue's Ben Thornton. Kelly then posted a 12-2 major decision win over Indiana's Garrett Pepple to move on to the final match against American's Josh Terao where Kelly would suffer a 4-3 decision loss, giving him the second-place finish on the day.
Freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Ohio) finished fifth in the 141-class. Hagan would start the day with a 4-1 decision loss to Bucknell's Tyler Smith who entered the tournament as the number one seed. Hagan then set his sights on taking the consolation bracket. Hagan would face Kent State's Chance Driscoll, posting a 5-2 decision win to move on to the next round. The freshman moved on to post a win by fall in 1:32 over Brown's Jimmy Pawelski before posting another win by fall in 6:58 over Kent State's Timothy Rooney. In the consolation semis, Hagan would earn a 5-2 decision win over American's Kizhan Clarke. In the fifth-place match, Hagan would post another 5-2 decision win to earn the spot in the top-five over George Mason's Tejon Anthony.
Redshirt junior Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) would finish the day in fifth place in the 165-class. Reese started the day with an 11-1 major decision win over American's Colin Shannon. Reese then posted a win by fall in 6:11 over Hofstra's Jake Kaminsky before falling to Navy's Drew Daniels in a 4-3 decision loss in the quarter-finals. Reese would then join the consolation bracket in the fourth round, posting a win by fall in 4:45 over American's Michael Eckhart before moving on to the consolation semi-finals and posting a win by fall in 1:48 over No. 22 Purdue's Jacob Morrissey to move on to the final. Reese would take an 8-0 major decision win over Bucknell's DJ Hollingshead to take the fifth-place spot.
Redshirt junior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) would take fourth-place in the 285-class. Parker started the day with a win by fall in 1:49 over Brown's Tony Valentino before earning a 5-2 decision win over Oregon State's Cody Crawford. Parker would suffer a 10-3 decision loss to Columbia's Garrett Ryan in the semi-finals before moving on to the third-place match against No. 22 Purdue's Shawn Streck where he would suffer a 12-4 major decision loss and earn the fourth-place finish.
OHIO IN THE MAC
The Ohio wrestling team was ranked tied for third place in the MAC November rankings released Friday (Nov. 17) while also landing five wrestlers in the top-4 of their class.
Redshirt freshman Mario Guillen, sophomore Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio), freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Ohio), junior Austin Reese and junior Zack Parker each represented Ohio in the top-5 of their weight class.
Ohio is set to host Appalachian State on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 11:30 a.m. in the Convocation Center to open the home portion of the schedule.
