ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team (0-1) is set to open the home portion of the 2017-18 season with a match-up against Appalachian State on Saturday (Dec. 2). Action is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
REWINDING LAST WEEK
Ohio suffered a 27-9 loss to Mid-American Conference competitor Buffalo on Saturday (Nov. 25) in Buffalo, N.Y.
No. 14 Junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) would face Buffalo's Bryan Lantry, who is currently ranked fifth in the weight-class, for the second year in a row. In last year's battle, Kelly would pull away a 6-4 decision win. Kelly would earn a victory again this year in a 4-3 decision win. Kelly would earn a takedown in the first round, allowing him to lead 2-1 heading into the second round. Kelly would earn another point in the second round before earning his fourth in the last round to mark Ohio's first victory on the day. Kelly now has five career wins over Lantry.
Freshman Alec Hagen (Eureka, Ohio) started his match with a takedown in the first round, giving him a 4-0 lead before the second round. Hagen would earn another point in the second round, dominating the match until the end of the third to pull out a 5-0 decision win. Hagen's victory marked as the freshman's first dual meet as a Bobcat.
Hagen is now leading the NCAA in wins with 16 on the season.
Redshirt senior Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.) began the match with a 4-2 lead after the first round. In the second round, Cummings and Fasnacht would battle to bring the scores to 7-6 before the last round. Cummings would continue to control the match in the last round, adding two points to earn a 9-6 decision victory. Cumming's win would mark Ohio's third on the day, tying up the scores once again at 9-9.
SCOUTING APPALACHIAN STATE
The Mountaineers (2-1) enter the weekend coming off of a 30-6 loss to North Carolina on Nov. 26. Appalachian State has recorded two wins on the season, shutting out Davidson 45-0 and posting a 28-7 victory over Bloomsburg at home.
Appalachian State's sophomore Laken Cook and redshirt freshman Thomas Flitz posted the Mountaineers' only two victories against UNC in the 157 and 165 class respectively.
Two athletes represent Appalachian State in the NCAA according to InterMat's rankings on Tuesday (Nov. 28). Junior Matt Zovistoski is currently ranked 14th in the 149-class while senior Forrest Pryzybysz is currently ranked 20th in the 174 weight-class.
OHIO IN THE MAC
The Ohio wrestling team was ranked tied for third place in the MAC November rankings released Friday (Nov. 17) while also landing five wrestlers in the top-4 of their class.
Redshirt freshman Mario Guillen, sophomore Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio), freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Ohio), junior Austin Reese and junior Zack Parker each represented Ohio in the top-5 of their weight class.
Ohio is set hit the road again to take on reigning Mid-American Conference champion Missouri on Sunday, Dec. 10. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
