Ohio Wrestling Set to Travel to No. 4 Missouri

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio wrestling team (0-2) is set to continue the 2017-18 season with a match-up against reigning Mid-American Conference Champion No. 4 Missouri on Sunday (Dec. 10). Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET at the Hearnes Center.

REWINDING LAST WEEK
Ohio suffered an 18-14 loss to Appalachian State in its home opener on Saturday (Dec. 2) in Athens, Ohio. Four Bobcats would record wins for Ohio on the day.

No. 15 Junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) and the Mountaineer's Codi Russell would match-up in the 133-class. Kelly started the match with a takedown in the first period and Russell would quickly earn an escape followed by another takedown by Kelly. Kelly would then earn back-to-back near-falls to take the first period 12-1. Kelly earned an escape to start the second period followed by a takedown by Russell to make it 13-3, Kelly would earn an escape followed by a takedown to lead 17-3 going into the third. Russell would earn a takedown to start the third period. Kelly would earn an escape followed by takedown and a near-fall to take the match in a 20-3 technical fall.

Redshirt sophomore Kade Kowalski (Nashport, Ohio) would earn a takedown at the start of the first period to earn a 2-0 lead before the second. Kowalski would remain in control, earning an escape to start the second and increasing his lead to 3-0 to start the third. Londoff would respond and earn a takedown in the third period, but by Kowalski would quickly earn an escape and take the match with a 5-2 decision win to tie up all scores at 3-3.

Redshirt senior Cullen Cummings beat Appalachian State's Angel Najar in an 11-5 decision victory. After a stalemate in the first where Najar shot in for several takedowns but was stuffed by Cummings, Cummings picked up eight points in the second frame off a pair of escapes, a two-point takedown, and a near fall and led 8-2 going into the third. Najar started the third with an escape but Cummings pulled off a takedown with just over a minute left and spent most of the rest of the match in the top position but gave up a point with a called stall with just eight seconds left. With riding time and an escape, Cummings finished the match on top, 11-5.

Redshirt senior Austin Reese (Urbana, Ohio) would earn a takedown to start the match. Flitz would then earn an escape to bring it to 2-1 before the second period. Flitz would earn another escape in the second period to tie it up at 2-2 going into the third. Reese would earn a quick escape in the start of the third to lead 3-2 while he also earned a point for riding time at 2:41 to take the match 4-2, giving the Bobcats a 9-3 lead.

SCOUTING MISSOURI
The Tigers are currently 7-0 to start the 2017-18 season and 5-0 at home. The defending MAC Champions are ranked fourth in the country, recording a 22-12 win over No.10 Virginia Tech on Nov. 25. Missouri leads the MAC with 33 points on the season.

Sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eirman, redshirt senior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee and redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis are all currently undefeated this season. The Tigers currently have 10 wrestlers in the top-4 of their weight class in the December MAC rankings.

The last time the two squads met, Ohio hosted Mizzou. The dual ended in a 35-7 win for the Tigers. Kade Kowalski and Zack Parker would represent Ohio's victories on the day. s

OHIO IN THE MAC
The Ohio wrestling team was ranked in third place in the MAC December rankings while also landing five wrestlers in the top-4 of their class.

Redshirt freshman Mario Guillen, junior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio), freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Ohio), junior Austin Reese and junior Zack Parker each represented Ohio in the top-5 of their weight class for the second month in a row.

Ohio is set to continue road match-ups as it travels to Chattanooga, Tenn. to compete with the Mocs on Monday, Dec. 18. Action is set to begin at 6 p.m.
