CLEVELAND -- The Ohio wrestling team has been picked to finish third in the Mid-American Conference in the league's 2018-19 preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced today.
The Bobcats finished with 15.5 points in the poll. Six-time defending MAC champion Missouri was picked to win the league again with 27 points.
Several Bobcats enter the 2018-19 season ranked in the top four in their respective weight classes. Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) is ranked in the MAC at 125, redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio) is ranked second at 133, Senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) is ranked fourth at 141, redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) is ranked third at 149, redshirt junior Zac Carson (Eureka, Mo.) is ranked second at 157, junior Hunter Yeargen (Willard, Mo.) is tied for fourth in the rankings at 184, sophomore Aaron Naples is ranked fourth at 197 and redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) is ranked third at heavyweight.
The wrestling team officially opens up the 2018-19 season under the direction of head coach Joel Greenlee with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., for the Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 3). The Bobcats will host their first home dual meet of the season on Dec. 20 when they welcome Chattanooga to the Convocation Center. The 2019 MAC Wrestling Championships will be held March 8-9 and hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. Click here for Ohio's complete schedule.
