PITTSBURGH -- Senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) of the Ohio wrestling team advanced to the round of 16 in the championship bracket of the 2019 NCAA Championships this afternoon at PPG Paints Arena.
Kelly, the No. 12 seed at 141 pounds, earned a 6-4 win by decision over North Carolina redshirt junior A.C. Headlee, the No. 21 seed, courtesy of a late takedown in the third period. Kelly will take on Missouri redshirt junior Jaydin Eierman, who is the No. 5 seed, in the round of 16 this evening.
Ohio's three other NCAA Championship participants will be competing in the consolation bracket this evening.
Redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio), the No. 23 seed at 133 pounds, lost to Penn State freshman Roman Bravo-Young, the No. 10 seed, by an 8-2 decision. Guillen will take on Appalachian State sophomore Codi Russell in the consolation bracket.
Redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio), the No. 22 seed at 157, lost to Ohio State redshirt junior Ke-Shawn Hayes, the No. 11 seed, by a 7-1 decision. Carson will face Columbia senior Dan Reed in the consolation bracket.
Redshirt senior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.), the No. 30 seed at 285, lost to Minnesota freshman Gable Stevenson, the No. 3 seed, by an 18-3 technical fall. Parker will square off against Purdue redshirt senior Jacob Aven in the wrestle-back prelims.
Session 2 of the 2019 NCAA Championships will get underway at 7 p.m. ET this evening. The action will be nationally televised on ESPN.
