Muncie, Ind. – The Ohio swim and dive team has recorded their second win of the 2017-18 season after competing against Mid-American Conference opponent, Ball State, on Saturday (Oct.28). The Bobcats secured the 185-114 win over the Cardinals by gathering 11 wins in the dual.
"The team had great energy today and really got behind each other," head coach, Rachel Komisarz-Baugh commented. "We had some standout races that shows the progress of the team. We still have a lot of work to do, but I know these girls are tough, and they will put their all into each performance."
Ohio kicked off the afternoon in the 400-yard medley relay where the Bobcat relay of senior Caroline Raley (Mobile, Ala.), sophomore Emilia Lahtinen (Ylojarvi, Finland), junior Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.), and sophomore Emily Zimcosky (Smock, Pa.) finished first with a final time of 3:51.47.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, the Bobcats stole the first two spots with junior Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) placing first in 10:28.36 and sophomore Mackenzie Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio) placed second in 10:34.75.
Zimcosky and freshman Hannah Schlegel (Birdsboro, Pa.) placed first and second in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:54.98 and 1:56.79, respectively.
Raley was the first Bobcat to touch the wall in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.76 to earn second place.
Lahtinen finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke when she clocked in at 1:06.95, just ahead of junior Emily Ortner (Concord, Calif.) in third with a time of 1:07.86.
Freshman Samantha Glass (Villa Hills, Ky.) recorded the win in the 200-yard butterfly after posting a time of 2:05.57.
Van Lanen placed first in the 50-yard free with a time of 23.23 and went on to compete in the 100-yard free, where she secured another win with a time of 51.69 just ahead of Zimcosky in second at 53.39.
In the 20-yard backstroke, Glass won with a final time of 2:06.26.
Ohio went 1-2-3 for the first of three times in the 200-yard breaststroke with Hornstra first to touch the wall and followed by Lahtinen and Ortner. Hornstra finished with a time of 2:23.39, Lahtinen at 2:24.65, and Ortner at 2:28.32.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Ohio went 1-2-3 again with Schlegel posting a time of 5:03.97, Henderson posting a time of 5:09.17, and Caruthers posting a time of 5:11.80.
Van Lanen recorded her third win in the 100-yard fly by clocking in at 55.57.
Glass secured the win in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.49.
The Bobcat 400-yard freestyle relay team of Zimcosky, Henderson, Hornstra, and Schlegel secured the final win for Ohio with a final time of 3:35.56.
In the 1-meter dive, freshman Ryleigh Tuck-Macalla (Bay Villiage, Ohio) scored a total of 189.98 points to earn second place. Sophomore Ireland Littlejohn (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed fourth with a total of 173.48.
Junior Nicole Hughes (Cleveland, Ohio) placed third in the 3-meter dive with a total of 210.53 followed by Littlejohn in fourth with a score of 201.83 and Tuck-Macalla in fifth with a score of 188.78.
The Bobcats return to Athens to host their first event of the season against MAC foe, Buffalo. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 in the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
