ATHENS, Ohio -- A fun-filled afternoon was capped off by the Green Team defeating the White Team, 3-2, in the 2017 version of the Ohio volleyball program's annual Green & White Scrimmage on Saturday (Aug. 19) at the Convocation Center.
The Bobcats got the day started by hosting a free clinic for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. While the team warmed up for the scrimmage, free activities such as face painting and cornhole took place around the Convo.
The scrimmage featured intense, back-and-forth competition between the two squads, and fourth-year head coach Deane Webb utilized a variety of different lineups throughout the afternoon. The Green squad ultimately came away victorious by posting a 17-15 win in the fifth set to break the stalemate.
"I feel really comfortable with the team," said redshirt sophomore outside hitter Carley Remmers (Filley, Neb.) on her assessment of her squad after both the Green & White Scrimmage and a 4-0 win over Wheeling Jesuit in an exhibition match on Thursday (Aug. 17) at the Convo. "Our chemistry right now is really strong. Out of the three years I've been here, I feel like it's the best. There's definitely things we need to work on yet, but I feel like we're meshing very well on the court, and I think that's something that will take us pretty far."
Following the match, Remmers, freshman setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) and sophomore libero Meredith Howe (Grand Rapids, Mich.) were in contention to earn the Bobcats' gray jersey, which is awarded to the hardest working player following every practice. Webb allowed the fans to decide the vote for the Green & White Scrimmage, with Howe coming away with honors.
Ohio opens the 2017 season in Birmingham, Ala., at the Courtyard By Marriott Invitational next weekend (Aug. 25-26) where it will take on Murray State, host Samford and Southeastern Louisiana. The Bobcats will return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Sept. 1-2 to play host to the annual Bobcat Invitational, welcoming Georgia, Oklahoma and High Point to Athens. Ohio's 30-match regular season slate is highlighted by four non-conference tournaments, 12 home matches at the Convocation Center and 16 Mid-American Conference matchups. The Bobcats will battle five teams that ranked in the top-100 of the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) in 2016 and eight 2016 NCAA Championship qualifiers.
