2017-18 AVCA Team Academic Award Release
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Ohio volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2017-18 season, as announced by the organization on Monday (July 16).
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619-team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
The Bobcats were one of 973 teams to earn the award. This number breaks the previous year's total of 835 to set an all-time high.
Additionally, Ohio was honored for reaching its Dig Pink® fundraising goals through the Side-Out Foundation. Dig Pink® is a nationwide movement to provide meaningful and impactful experiences for athletes while inspiring and empowering them to come together in support of the stage IV breast cancer community. Each year, hundreds of teams across the country (and some overseas) participate in the Dig Pink® Rally.
Ohio placed five student-athletes on the 2017 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team -- junior setter/outside hitter Stephanie Olman (Maumee, Ohio), redshirt sophomore outside hitter Carley Remmers (Filley, Neb.), sophomore libero Meredith Howe (Grand Rapids, Mich.), sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Sara Januszewski (Oak Creek, Wis.) and sophomore outside hitter/libero Allyson Vaughn (Glenview, Ill.). Howe earned MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition.
The Bobcats are coming off of a 2017 season that saw Ohio go 17-15 -- including a 10-6 mark in MAC play. Ohio earned the No. 4 seed in the 2017 MAC Championship and a bye to the tournament quarterfinals. Ohio topped Eastern Michigan, 3-1, to advance to the league tournament semifinals for the 16th year in a row. Returning for Ohio in 2018 will be 2017 MAC Setter of the Year Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy), 2017 MAC Freshman of the Year Tia Jimerson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) and 2017 First Team All-MAC outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Frisco, Texas). Outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) -- a 2016 All-MAC Honorable Mention selection -- will also be back for a final season after redshirting the 2017 campaign due to injury.
The Bobcats have gone 81-43 (.653) in four seasons under the direction of head coach Deane Webb -- including 50-14 (.781) in MAC play. Ohio won a MAC regular season title with a perfect 16-0 (1.000) league year in 2014, then captured the conference tournament title in 2015.
The 2018 preseason features two events prior to the start of regular season competition. Ohio will hold its annual Green & White Scrimmage at the Convocation Center on Aug. 11. The Bobcats will then welcome Pittsburgh to the Convo for an exhibition match on Aug. 18. Ohio will make the drive up U.S. Route 33 to Columbus to compete in a tournament hosted by in-state rival Ohio State (Aug. 24-25) to open the new regular season. The Bobcats return to the friendly confines of the Convo to play host to the annual Bobcat Invitational (Sept. 7-8). Click here for Ohio's full 2018 schedule.
