COLUMBIA, Mo-- The Ohio volleyball team (4-8) came up short to Missouri (9-2), 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 25-12), tonight in its second match of the Mizzou Invitational at the Hearnes Center.
Redshirt senior right-side hitter Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) again led Ohio in kills with 12 and also added four assisted blocks. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) registered 10 kills on 27 attempts finishing with a .259 hitting percentage and also added three service aces. Junior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas) registered eight kills and a match-high five service aces while redshirt junior middle blocker Simone Miller (Kalamazoo, Mich.) registered a team-high five assisted blocks for the Bobcats. Sophomore setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) registered 23 assists to lead Ohio followed by freshman setter Kyra Slavik (Saint Charles, Ill.) who registered 11 assists. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Macy Reihing (Lexington, Kentucky) recorded a match-high 21 digs.
Stephens registered three consecutive service aces to give the Bobcats an early 12-8 lead in the opening set. The Bobcats and the Tigers, in a race to 25, had three lead changes and seven ties, two of which were ties at 20 and 23. Coming down to the wire, the Bobcats fell short, 25-23.
Ohio came back with aggression to begin the second set, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead. With the lead growing larger for the Bobcats, Stephens tallied two more service aces around a Kosiorek kill, contributing to a 10-point, 18-8, lead over Mizzou. The Bobcats rallied to win the second set 25-21.
With the Bobcats and the Tigers both with one set win apiece, the Bobcats suffered a 14-6 deficit throughout the first half of the third set. Two kills and a service ace for Kosiorek partnered with a block by Stephens closed the gap to 14-11 in a Bobcat effort to battle back. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not fully recover from the early deficit resulting in a 25-18 set win for the Tigers.
To begin the fourth set of match play, the Tigers continued to build on their momentum placing Ohio in 10-point, 15-5, deficit. Nelson, subbing back into set four with a score of 15-6, tallied two kills and three block assists in a Bobcats attempt to force a fifth set. With a kill percentage of .538 and a hitting percentage of .385, Mizzou continued to capitalize on its lead winning the fourth set 25-12.
Sophomore outside hitter Kylie Deberg led the Tigers with a match-high 19 kills hitting .349 followed by sophomore outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh who finished the evening with 18 kills hitting .306. Redshirt freshman setter Jaden Newsome led the match with 24 assists for the Tigers followed by redshirt freshman setter Andrea Fuentes, who recorded a double-double, tallying 16 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore outside/right-side hitter Dariana Hollingsworth compiled a team-high 13 digs. Redshirt junior defensive specialist Riley Sents added 11 digs for the Tigers.
Ohio will return to the Heames Center Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon for its final match of the Mizzou Invitational against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. EST.
