The 13,000 seat Convocation Center, opened in 1969, is the home court for Ohio Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Wrestling and Women’s Volleyball. The $8.2 million facility still exhibits a first-class look with the very latest in modern facilities, equipment, and comfort.
The Convo, as it is known, is perhaps one of the University’s most recognized buildings and is one of the largest facilities in the region. It can hold over 15,000 people for convocations and is an ideal site for concerts and commencements
Brubaker and Brandt Architects of Columbus designed the circular building with Knowlton Construction Company of Bellefontaine serving as prime contractors. It houses athletic administration and coaches offices, locker rooms, equipment room, and an athletic training room. Dormitories above the concourse are homes to students during the academic year. The Convo also serves as the home of the Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame, located in the main entrance lobby.
Improved television quality lighting, a permanent press row, and an expanded camera deck highlight some of the Convo’s improvements over the years. More recently, in the summer of 2016, all of the arena seating and bleachers were replaced with new high quality padded seats.
As part of the 50thanniversary celebration of the Convo, a new, state-of-the-art, center-hung videoboard was installed above center court. Funded entirely by Intercollegiate Athletics, the videoboard project was completed prior to the start of the 2018-19 academic year. The four-sided display measures 11’x21’ along the sides, 9’x14’ on the end lines and is expected to enhance the fan experience and entertainment value at the Convocation Center for years to come.
