ATHENS, Ohio -- Ohio Athletics will close out the first week of the new academic year by playing host to four home sporting events this weekend.
The field hockey team gets the weekend starting by welcoming Drexel to town on Friday (Aug. 30) for the 2019 season opener. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. ET at Pruitt Field. At 4 p.m. ET, the soccer team (2-0) looks to keep its perfect start to the season intact when it takes on Cleveland State at Chessa Field.
The football team will open its highly anticipated 2019 season on Saturday (Aug. 31) when it squares off against Rhode Island. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. ET at Peden Stadium. For ticket information, call the ticket office at 1-800-575-2287 or click here.
Saturday's contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+, with Michael Reghi and Dustin Fox on the call. Saturday's game can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield IMG College. Russ Eisenstein returns for his 12th season as the "Voice of the Bobcats." Ohio Alum Rob Cornelius has been a part of the broadcasts for two decades. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station network's flagship. The broadcasts are also available online through TuneIn.com/OhioBobcats and on the TuneIn app.
Field hockey will then close out its opening weekend by playing host to No. 23-ranked Boston in a 7 p.m. ET matchup at Pruitt.
Soccer's second weekend of the 2019 season wraps up with a trip to Huntington, W. Va., to take on Marshall on Sunday (Sept. 1) at 1 p.m. ET.
The volleyball team and men's and women's cross country teams will also be in action this weekend.
Volleyball heads to Wisconsin for the Green Bay Invite, battling Fresno State at 2 p.m. ET and tournament host Green Bay at 8 p.m. ET on Friday (Aug. 30), then facing Northeastern at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday (Aug. 31). Before returning to Athens, the Bobcats will make a stop in West Lafayette, Ind., to match up with No. 17-ranked Purdue at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday (Sept. 1).
The cross country teams will open their seasons at the Queen City Invite on Saturday (Aug. 31).
Admission to the soccer and field hockey home matches are FREE, and students get into all home football games for FREE!
The Bobcats are ready for year two under head coach Ali Johnstone. Ohio returns junior Jillian Shive (Lebanon, Ohio), who earned All-MAC Second Team in 2018. Shive, who played and started in all 17 games for Ohio in 2018, scored 11 goals, good enough for second in the MAC, while also tallying one assist for a team-leading 23 points.

The Bobcats enter this weekend's matches with a 2-0 record, marking only the second time in program history that the Bobcats roll into the second weekend of action with that record.
Ohio's season opened up with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 22. In the 95th minute, sophomore Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio) scored off of a ball from senior Alivia Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) to give Ohio the victory.
Ohio returned to action in Aug. 25 where the Bobcats defeated Northern Kentucky, 1-0, off of a goal from Milesky in the 61st minute.

Cleveland State comes to Athens with a 1-0-1 record, before Ohio heads to Marshall to battle the 0-2-0 Thundering Herd.
The Bobcats kick off their 124th season against the Rams. Ohio is 9-5 (.643) in season openers in the Frank Solich era. The Bobcats are seeking their third-straight victory in a season opener and fifth in the last six seasons. Ohio will be opening the season at home for the fourth year in a row.
On Monday, Ohio was selected as the unanimous favorite to win the MAC East Division title in the conference's coaches poll.

Three players – junior setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy), senior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas) and junior middle blocker Tia Jimerson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) – were named to the Preseason All-MAC East team before the beginning of the season.
