Michael Stephens is in his fifth year as Ohio University's Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations.
In his position, Stephens oversees Ohio Athletics' marketing, ticket operations, media relations, multimedia marketing, broadcasting and serves as the department's liaison with IMG College and adidas. The Nebraska native coordinates football scheduling, handles post season logistics for men’s and women’s basketball and football and is also the sports administrator for women’s soccer, women’s track & field and men’s and women’s cross country.
Stephens arrived in Athens in 2014 following a 12-year tenure in the University of Nebraska Athletics Department where he most recently served as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Licensing - a role he held from the fall of 2008 until his departure to Ohio.
In his previous role at role at Nebraska, Stephens led a marketing department of seven full-time staff members. He also was responsible for ticket marketing, game-day promotions, concessions, the Spirit Squad and the Huskers Authentic Team Store.
Stephens also worked with Husker IMG Sports Marketing, serving as the athletic department's primary liaison to its media rights partner. In addition, he directed the licensing program and worked closely with the Huskers.com staff to integrate marketing into the athletic department website and social media accounts. He also co-chaired the marketing and communications strategic planning committee that formulated and implemented Nebraska's recruiting, marketing and communications plan.
Stephens joined the Husker staff as the director of licensing in 2002. He added the titles of director of concessions in 2005 and director of corporate marketing in 2007.
Before joining the Nebraska staff, he spent two years as the manager of corporate sponsorship sales with the Kansas City Royals. Prior to joining the big club in Kansas City, Stephens spent eight years with the Omaha Royals.
A native of Omaha, Neb., Stephens earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in 1991 and a master's degree from Western Illinois in 1994. Stephens and his wife, Lisa, have two sons, Trevor and Andrew.
