HARRIS, Michigan – The Ohio men's golf team opened the golf season with an 11th-place finish at the Island Resort Intercollegiate. The tournament, hosted by South Dakota State, was held at Sage Run Golf Course.
Ohio finished the three rounds with a total team score of 885. Michigan took home first-place with a total score of 834, 54-strokes ahead of the Bobcats.
Leading the way was senior Jack Neville (Terrace Park, Ohio) with a total score of 219. The senior was a consistent performer all three rounds shooting a 74 in the first round, 73 in the second, and 72 to wrap it up. Neville's strong performance earned him a tie for 41st.
Sophomores Carson Trafford (Dublin, Ohio) and Sheil Iyer (Dublin, Ohio) were strong performers for the Bobcats. The duo from Dublin scored a 222 over the three rounds finishing tied for 51st. Trafford scored a 75, 72, and 75 over the three respective rounds. Iyer shot 76, 75, and finished with an impressive 71.
Finishing just behind Trafford and Iyer, sophomore Will Kates (Centennial, Colorado) ended his tournament with a tie for 59th. Kates shot a 224 over the three rounds with round scores of 74, 73, and 77.
Junior Matt Daulton (Lebanon, Ohio) finished one stroke behind Kates, totalling a 225 over the two-day event. Daulton had a strong first day shooting a 73 in the first and second rounds of the tournament. His final round score of 79 placed him in a tie for 61st.
Five strokes behind Daulton, junior Sam Hogan (Burlington, Canada) finished in 74th. The Canadian showed improvement over the three rounds: 79, 77, and 74.
In the first round Sunday (Sept. 3) morning, Ohio scored a 296 as a team. They backed this up in the afternoon with a 291. The Bobcats finished the tournament on Monday (Sept. 4) with an aggregate total of 298.
While Michigan took home the team hardware, Illinois State's Alex McCulla took home the individual championship. McCulla started strong with rounds of 64 and 65 on Sunday. He backed the strong start up with 70. The Illinois State golfer took home the victory with a total score of 199, three strokes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Ohio will head to Nashport, Ohio in three weeks (Sept. 25 - 26) to partake in the Virtues Intercollegiate tournament. The event will take place at Virtues Golf Course and is hosted by Miami.
