ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team (5-18, 1-3 MAC) dropped its Mid-American Conference weekend series opener to Bowling Green (9-12, 4-0 MAC), 7-3, tonight at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Bobcats and the Falcons combined for 24 hits, but Ohio only plated three runs on 11 hits and three Bowling Green errors and stranded 11 runners on base. Ohio left the bases loaded in the home half of the fifth inning with Bowling Green protecting a 6-1 lead.
The Falcons tallied the contest's first two runs in the top of the third. Freshman right fielder Mike Malewitz and junior center fielder Jake Wilson recorded back-to-back one-out singles. Malewitz scored the game's first run on a base hit to right by sophomore first baseman Adam Furnas. Wilson then extended Bowling Green's advantage to 2-0 when he scored one out later on a single to left by senior shortstop Neil Lambert.
Ohio answered with a run in the bottom of the third as redshirt freshman left fielder Trevor Lukkes (Tustin, Calif.) legged out a one-out infield single to third, took second on a failed pickoff attempt by Bowling Green sophomore right-handed starting pitcher Andrew Abrahamowicz and then scored on a single back up the middle by sophomore designated hitter Aaron Levy (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Bowling Green broke the contest open with a four-run fifth, though. With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman third baseman Ryan Johnston was hit by a pitch to push across senior designated hitter Brad Croy, who had reached on a single to left earlier in the inning. With Johnston, senior catcher Joe McGuinness, who had also been hit by a pitch, and senior second baseman Riley Minorik, who had reached by a fielder's choice, all on base, sophomore left fielder Dylan Dohanos delivered a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to left center to make it a five-run lead for the Falcons.
After the Bobcats stranded three on base in the home half of the fifth, the Falcons tacked on a seventh run in the sixth as Wilson led off with a single through the left side, advanced to second on a single to left by Furnas and scored on a base hit to left by Croy.
Ohio dented Bowling Green's lead with solo home runs in the seventh and eighth, but that's as close as the Bobcats got. Levy smacked a one-out solo shot to right in the seventh for his first home run of the season, and sophomore shortstop Treyben Funderburg (Beavercreek, Ohio) sent a two-out dinger over the left field wall for his first round tripper of the year.
Four Bobcats tallied multiple hits in the loss. Levy finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lukkes, junior catcher Tanner Piechnick (Canonsburg, Pa.) and redshirt freshman right fielder Cole Revels (Charlotte, N.C.) all recorded two singles.
Bowling Green was led at the plate by Furnas and Croy, who each logged three singles, while Malewitz and Wilson each posted a pair of base hits.
Abrahamowicz picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons, improving to 2-1 on the year. He struck out three while surrendering one unearned run on eight hits over six frames.
Senior right-handed starting pitcher Kenny Ogg (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the loss for Ohio, falling to 1-5 on the season. He struck out two in five innings of work. Junior lefty Nick Byrnes (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed 1.1 spotless frames while redshirt senior right-hander Nick Kamrada (Grand Ledge, Mich.) pitched a scoreless ninth. Both Byrnes and Kamrada struck out two batters.
Ohio will take on Bowling Green again on Saturday (March 30) at The Wren. Due to impending weather, first pitch is now scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. The contest was originally scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. ET.
