EMERSON, Ga. -- The Ohio baseball team (3-2) was edged by SIU Edwardsville (3-2), 2-1, on Friday (Feb. 24) in the opening game of a four-game series.
The Cougars broke a one-all tie with the Bobcats in the top of the eighth inning when senior second baseman Alec Skender scored on a two-out single to left field by sophomore catcher Brock Weimer.
The contest was scoreless through the first five frames. SIU Edwardsville broke through for the first run of the game in the top of the sixth. Junior right fielder Dustin Woodcock led off with a double to left center and scored on a double to left two outs later by Weimer.
Ohio evened the score in the home half of the frame when senior center fielder Spencer Ibarra (Fort Collins, Colo.) belted a one-out solo shot to right -- his first home run of the season. He led the Bobcats at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.
Redshirt junior left-handed starting pitcher Gerry Salisbury (Brunswick, Ohio) fanned six over six frames on the hill for the Bobcats. He allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks. Senior right-handed pitcher Tom Colletti (Wheaton, Ill.) tossed one scoreless inning of relief, striking out one and walking one. Senior right-handed pitcher Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) struck out two but allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk. He suffered his first pitching loss of the season. Sophomore right-hander Kenny Ogg (Indianapolis, Ind.) pitched the ninth inning, giving up a hit and a walk while tallying one strikeout.
Junior right-handed starting pitcher Nelson Martz earned the win on the mound for the Cougars, totaling seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk in seven frames of work. He improved to 1-1 on the year. Junior right-hander Mason McReaken picked up his second save of the season for SIU Edwardsville, fanning one and surrendering two hits over two innings of relief.
The Bobcats and the Cougars are set to play two on Saturday (Feb. 25) beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
