YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Ohio baseball team (16-17, 3-4 MAC) fell to Mid-American Conference West Division foe Eastern Michigan (14-20, 5-2 MAC) in the opening contest of a three-game series on Friday (April 14) at Oestrike Stadium.
Senior right-handed pitcher Sam Delaplane tossed a complete game for the Eagles, fanning 12 while allowing two runs -- one of which was earned -- on eight hits. He improved to 1-1 on the year.
Eastern Michigan took a 7-0 lead into the fifth inning, with senior catcher Jeremy Stidham belting a two-out, three-run home run to left in the bottom of the fourth -- his fourth dinger of the 2017 campaign.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard in the fifth when senior third baseman Connor Callery (Covington, Ky.) led off with a single to left and scored from third one out later on a wild pitch after junior right fielder Tony Giannini (Carmel, Ind.) and senior catcher Anthony Mrosla (Coon Rapids, Minn.) followed him with singles to load the bases. Eastern Michigan got the run back in the home half of the frame, though, when freshman third baseman Nick Jones coaxed a two-out walk and later scored on a base hit through the right side by sophomore second baseman Max Schuemann.
Ohio plated the contest's final run in the sixth when senior second baseman Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio) smacked a two-out single to left, took second when Callery was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an infield single to first by Giannini and scored on a passed ball with Mrosla at the plate.
Giannini went 3-for-4 for the Bobcats -- his fourth multi-hit effort of the season and first with at least three base knocks. Mrosla finished 2-for-4.
Redshirt senior right fielder Jordan Peterson delivered a 3-for-5 effort that included a double and a run scored to lead Eastern Michigan's bats. Jones and sophomore center fielder Drake Lubin each singled, walked and drove in a pair of runs.
Redshirt junior left-handed starting pitcher Gerry Salisbury (New Brunswick, Ohio) struck out three but gave up seven earned runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. He fell to 1-3 on the year.
Ohio will look to even the series when it faces Eastern Michigan on Saturday (April 15) in a 3 p.m. ET contest. Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) is scheduled to get the start on the mound for the Bobcats and oppose junior righty Brad Allen of the Eagles. 'Voice of the Bobcats' Russ Eisenstein will have the call on WOUB 1340 AM and online on OhioBobcats.com via Stretch Internet.
