OHIO SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK -- FEB. 20, 2017
MALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Michael Klein
Position: Infielder/Right-Handed Pitcher
Year: Redshirt Junior
Week's Achievements: Redshirt junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) put together a huge weekend for the Ohio baseball team (3-1) to help the Bobcats came away victorious in three of four games in Lexington, S.C. Klein led the team in batting average (.400), slugging percentage (.867), hits (6), home runs (2), RBIs (5) and total bases (13). He also scored three runs, walked twice and posted an on-base percentage of .471. Klein went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run to help Ohio thump La Salle, 10-2, in the 2017 season opener last Friday (Feb. 17). The following day against the Explorers, he went 3-for-5 with a double and his second home run in as many days a 15-4 victory for the Bobcats. Klein also got the start on the mound on Sunday (Feb. 19) in a 4-0 shutout of Butler. He tossed the first four scoreless frames, striking out five.
FEMALE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Madison Claytor
Major: Sport Management
Week's Achievements: Senior catcher/outfielder Madison Claytor (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the Ohio softball team (8-1) to four victories last weekend in the Ohio Softball Tournament, coming up in clutch situations. Claytor hit .364 in 13 at bats. She had four hits -- three of them home runs, including a grand slam and a game tying two-run home run. She also registered a double, a 1.273 slugging percentage, eight RBIs, 14 total bases, scored four runs and walked twice and struck out once and helped the Bobcats to a perfect 4-0 weekend. In the field, she also recorded 22 putouts and three assists. Last Friday (Feb. 17) in the Bobcats' first game against Rutgers, Claytor started things off with a bang. With the team down two runs in the bottom of the second, Claytor crushed her first home run of the day -- a two run shot to tie the game up. The next inning, with the bases juiced, Claytor cranked a shot over the left field fence for a grand slam, giving Ohio an 8-3 lead. Claytor had two hits, two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs in the Bobcats' 8-5 victory. Later in the day against Northern Illinois, with the Bobcats down 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, Claytor hit her third home run of the day -- a two-run shot to tie the game at 2-2. The Bobcats went on to win, 4-3, in 10 innings. Claytor had one hit, a home run, two RBIs, a run scored and one intentional walk in the victory. On Sunday (Feb. 19) against Rutgers, Claytor registered a double in the fourth inning. She also had one RBI and scored a run in Ohio's 9-3 victory over Rutgers.
