CLEVELAND -- Ohio baseball junior left-handed pitcher Butch Baird (Big Prairie, Ohio) has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (March 6).
Baird earns weekly conference honors for the first time in his Ohio career and gives the Bobcats two MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week honors in as many weeks, as redshirt junior right-hander Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) garnered recognition for the first time in his career last Monday (Feb. 27). On Feb. 20, redshirt junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Michael Klein garnered MAC East Division Player of the Week honors for the Bobcats.
Baird helped Ohio (7-5) come away with a weekend series win at Western Kentucky thanks to his performance on the mound last Saturday (March 4) in a 3-0 shutout victory at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky. He improved to 2-0 on the bump this year, tossing 6.2 frames and striking out two while allowing four hits and two walks in his third start as the Bobcats blanked the Hilltoppers, 3-0, to even the series. On Sunday (March 5), Ohio recorded another 3-0 shutout win over Western Kentucky to take the weekend set.
Through three starts in 2017, Baird is 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA and eight strikeouts over a team-high 17.2 innings of work. Ohio's pitching staff has posted three shutouts already this year after notching just one last season.
Ohio will play four games in the Dayton-area this weekend. The Bobcats are scheduled to play Dayton on Friday (March 10), then visit Wright State in a Saturday (March 11) doubleheader in Fairborn before closing the weekend with a Sunday (March 12) matchup against Western Illinois in Dayton.
