@Ohio_Baseball's Rott Named @MACSports East Division Player Of The Week

May 8, 2017

MAC Release

Ohio baseball sophomore infielder Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.) has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday (May 8).

Rott earns weekly conference honors for both the second time in 2017 and the second time in his career. He was also named MAC East Division Player of the Week on April 17.  The Bobcats have garnered five MAC East Division Player of the Week nods this year. Senior outfielder Spencer Ibarra (Fort Collins, Colo.) was named MAC East Division Player of the Week on both March 20 and April 4 while redshirt junior infielder/right-handed pitcher Michael Klein (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) garnered recognition on Feb. 20. Ohio has also received three MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week nods this season. Redshirt junior right-hander Jake Roehn (Sandwich, Ill.) was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 27 while junior southpaw Butch Baird (Big Prairie, Ohio) earned honors on March 6 and senior right-hander Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) did so on April 24.

Rott put together another strong week at the plate to help the Ohio baseball team (22-24, 8-10 MAC) earn its first series win over MAC East Division rival Bowling Green since 2011 last weekend at Bob Wren Stadium. Rott tied for the team lead with nine hits -- including a team-high three doubles and three home runs -- and drove in a team-high 12 runs. He posted a whopping 1.105 slugging percentage to go along with a .474 batting average and a .500 on-base percentage. Rott got the week started by finishing 5-for-6 with two dingers, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored as Ohio fell at Morehead State, 15-14, last Tuesday (May 2) in its final road midweek game of the 2017 season -- a contest that saw the Green & White pile up a season-high 19 hits and six home runs. In the Friday (May 5) series opener against Bowling Green, he bashed his first career grand slam to help power the Bobcats to a 9-1 victory. He hit his career-high 10th home run of the 2017 season, smacked a double and matched his career high with six RBIs. Rott went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored on Saturday (May 6) as Ohio exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on its way to a 9-4 triumph over Bowling Green that clinched the Bobcats' third MAC series win of the year. Rott then closed out the week by going 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in a tough 5-4 loss in the Sunday (May 7) series finale.

Through 46 games in 2017, Rott leads the leads the Bobcats in RBIs (44), doubles (14) and walks (18), ranks second in slugging percentage (.543), on-base percentage (.386), hits (56), home runs (10) and runs scored (33) and third in batting average (.304). He ranks third on the team with 15 multi-hit games and is tied for the team lead with eight multi-RBI games. In conference play, Rott owns a team-best .653 slugging percentage with a team-high seven doubles, six home runs and 32 RBIs. He ranks third on the squad with 24 hits in league play and is third with 15 runs scored.

Ohio plays host to longtime rival Marshall (24-23) in the final midweek game of the 2017 season on Tuesday (May 9) at Bob Wren Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Ohio will be looking to win the season series against Marshall. The Herd posted a 12-9 victory in Huntington, W. Va., April 12, but the Bobcats pulled out an 11-10 win in 10 innings on April 19 in Mason, Ohio, to even the season series.
