ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio baseball team battled rainy fall conditions on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at Wren Fest 2016 -- the program's annual intersquad scrimmage showcase -- in front of a legion of loyal fans as well as professional scouts in attendance at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Green Team came away with an 8-5 triumph over the Black Team. A two-run home run by junior outfielder Evan Bourn (Overland Park, Kan.) highlighted a four-run top of the seventh inning for the Green Team, breaking a four-all tie.
"The conditions made things a little difficult defensively," said fifth-year head coach Rob Smith. "Offensively, we had two or three opportunities to execute bunts and didn't. But, throughout the fall and continuing into tonight, we've been really, really good in two-strike counts, and you saw that in the last inning with a two-strike hits -- two of them that led to that big inning."
Off the diamond, the Bobcats gave $500 away to a lucky fan at the end of the night, capping an evening filled with fun promotions.
Ohio returns 26 players from 2016's 23-win team, including senior infielder Ty Black (Waynesville, Ohio), senior right-handed pitcher Jake Rudnicki (Toledo, Ohio) and sophomore infielder/catcher Rudy Rott (Holmen, Wis.), who was named to the 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team as a first baseman as selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The Bobcats welcome 11 new faces to their 2017 roster.
The Bobcats will hold their annual Alumni Game on Saturday (Oct. 1), then wrap up their 2016 fall schedule the following weekend with games against Bellarmine (Oct. 8) and Rio Grande (Oct. 9).
