ROSLYN, Pa. - Ohio football's Kalvin McRae has been named to the 2007 Watch List for the 71st Maxwell Award, presented annually to the outstanding collegiate football player in America.
McRae, a senior tailback from Decatur, Ga., was the only player from the Mid-American Conference to make the list of 65 candidates. The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's Selection Committee based on their performance during the 2006 season.
An All-MAC First Team selection in 2006, McRae will enter his final season in a Bobcat uniform needing 1,009 yards to break the schools career rushing record. The senior-to-be has averaged 1,202 yards on the ground over the course of his last two seasons, including 1,252 last year, which was the second-highest single-season total in Ohio history. McRae's junior campaign also saw him set a single-season school record with 15 rushing touchdowns, and he tied a school mark with eight 100-yard games.
McRae's inclusion on the 2007 Maxwell Award Watch List puts him in exclusive company. The preliminary list includes returning Associated Press All-Americans Darren McFadden (Arkansas), Steve Slaton (West Virginia), DeSean Jackson (California), Ray Rice (Rutgers), Mike Hart (Michigan), Jarrett Dillard (Rice), Colt Brennan (Hawai'i) and Ian Johnson (Boise State).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists will be announced November 26th. The winner of the 2007 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 6, 2007. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City in March, 2008.
McRae and the Bobcats begin defense of their MAC East Division championship on Sept. 1 versus Gardner-Webb at Peden Stadium. For season ticket information, call the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-575-CATS or log on to www.ohiobobcats.com.
