ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt has announced the hiring of Warren Swain to the position of Director of Broadcasting, which includes play-by-play duties for the Ohio Sports Network.
The new "Voice of the Bobcats" brings a distinguished resume to his new position in Athens. A veteran of collegiate athletics broadcasting, Swain most recently served as the play-by-play voice for Drake University. In addition to Drake, Swain's play-by-play experience includes covering Nebraska, Virginia, Oregon, Iowa State and Creighton since his career began in 1972.
Swain's duties will extend beyond play-by-play in Ohio's Director of Broadcasting position. Swain will also be responsible for coordinating all radio broadcast activities for OSN, including games, the "Frank Solich Call-In Show" and "Tim O'Shea Call-In Show," and the daily "Bobcat Minute." Among his other responsibilities, Swain will also be involved in the coordination of OSN television broadcasts and will work with OSN affiliates.
Swain got his start in collegiate athletics broadcasting in 1972 calling Iowa State football and Creighton men's basketball for KMA Radio in Shenandoah, Iowa. In that position, he stayed with ISU football through the 1979 season and called Creighton hoops for two years before the station switched to ISU men's basketball, which he called through the 1979-80 campaign.
From Iowa State, Swain then became the voice of the Oregon Ducks. Following three years in Eugene, Swain had his first stint in Des Moines, Iowa as the sports director at KRNT and voice of the Drake Bulldogs from 1983-85. He then spent 11 seasons as sports director at WINA and play-by-play voice of the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville. Swain followed the Virginia job with six years behind the microphone for the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1996-2002.
A graduate of the Drake University School of Journalism, Swain has been named the Iowa, Oregon, Virginia and Nebraska "Sportscaster of the Year" during his career, including the Virginia award six times.
The Swain hire replaces Derek Scott, who served as the "Voice of the Bobcats" for nine seasons. Scott, who was also Ohio's Associate Athletic Director for Communications, is now employed by Action Sports Media with the University of South Carolina Athletics in Columbia, S.C.
