Offensive Coordinator Tim Albin
"I think competition is great. We have it at the fullback spot and the quarterback spot. Those guys are out there every day, and we're grading the tape. Coach Gdowski is keeping track of their numbers. If you have to come out each and every day and perform at a high level, that can only be beneficial to an offense. Not only at the quarterback spot, but across the board, competition is going to help us."
On when a starting quarterback will be named:
"Hopefully, sooner rather than later. We're not going to be able to work three or four guys in at the quarterback spot. We're going to have to narrow it done. When that is? Coach (Solich) will be making that call. I'm sure we'll start to narrow it down in the next couple of weeks, obviously. We're going to start splitting up and start working on Tennessee-Martin pretty quick. I can't tell you next Thursday or next Wednesday, but soon."
On the difference in the offense this year compared to last season:
"We're getting places a lot easier. We're just moving around a lot easier. Going into spring ball, Coach (Solich) wanted to get it simplified and make sure our best players were on the field. Offensively, we have cut back on some things. We're not carrying as many runs as we did a year ago. Hopefully, we can finish stronger at the end of the year. Last year, the last couple of games we weren't producing. Hopefully, with a lot of reps with what we're doing, it will work in our favor for the whole season."
Defensive Coordinator Jimmy Burrow
On returning so many starters:
"If you're returning an experienced group of football players, the one thing that really stands out to a coaching staff is their (the players) knowledge of the defense. As a result of that, they're going to play a lot faster than they did when they were inexperienced. That's the one thing that we've seen during our first week. They understand the defense. They're able to understand what they did right and what they did wrong. Because of that we've become a much faster football team. When you combine that with added strength, speed and athletic ability by really each guy on the defense, what you think you have is a great group of athletes that's going to play great defense. Our goal is to always play fast. The only way to do that is to have a complete understanding of what we're trying to accomplish. We changed everything last year. I'm sure there were times when a guy didn't play as fast as his speed would indicate because he was thinking too much."
On this year's depth:
"One thing last year was that guys were playing 70, sometimes 80 plays. It doesn't matter where you are, that's not going to work out toward the end of the year. Our plan is to alternate a lot of guys. We think we're pretty well two deep at all the spots. Whether it's Landon Cohen, Matt Muncy or T.J. Wright, you're not going to see them out there for 70 plays. They're going to get breaks. I think that'll be a big difference, not only in the first part of the year, but especially toward the end of the year after you've had a lot of reps and played a lot of games."
