ATHENS, Ohio - Between practice sessions, the Bobcat football squad took time to talk with members of the local media on the team's annual Media Day.
A wide variety of topics were discussed. From the on-going competition for the starting quarterback spot to the improved experience and depth, the Bobcats were optimistic about the upcoming campaign.
"We're excited about the season" Head Coach Frank Solich said. "We think that we're going to have a better football team. It's obvious to me that that will be the case. We'll just have more speed, have more strength and we'll be more athletic."
While there are 17 returning starters, Solich isn't letting players rest on their past performances. Competiton was a theme throughout the afternoon.
"There's no one that has got anything sealed up on our football team," Solich said. "Those guys that are returning starters need to perform like starters in order to keep their starting job and if that doesn't happen, then all bets are off."
"If you have to come out each and every day and perform at a high level, that can only be beneficial to an offense," Offensive Coordinator Tim Albin said. "Not only at the quarterback spot, but across the board, competition is going to help us."
The Bobcats open the 2006 season on Sept. 2 at Peden Stadium against Tennessee-Martin. For information on tickets and the new Bobcat Family Package, which includes two adult and two youth (ages 3-18) season tickets for $79, call the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-575-CATS.
