ATHENS, Ohio - The recently-announced Stand Up and Cheer Friday campaign, designed to promote pride in Ohio University amongst students, staff, community members and alumni, gets underway Sept. 1. Everyone with ties to the University is urged to wear apparel that shows off that affiliation.
The campaign will also offer a website component that will allow Bobcat supporters to send in photos and messages supporting the Stand Up and Cheer philosophy to www.ohiobobcats.com
"No matter where a Bobcat may be, we want them to know they can participate in this effort," said Derek Scott, Ohio Associate Athletics Director for Communications. "We will post a new Stand Up and Cheer photo each week on the web and also include testimonials submitted by supporters who describe their favorite Stand Up and Cheer moment."
"Stand Up and Cheer!" is derived from Ohio University's fight song, and during a press conference Aug. 25 Mayor Ric Abel proclaimed Fridays throughout the year to be Stand Up and Cheer Fridays in Athens. In an official proclamation, Abel urged all residents, business owners and their employees to wear Ohio University apparel and/or to showcase Stand Up and Cheer displays.
The new Bobcat mascot, which will make its debut at Ohio's college football season-opener Sept. 2, will also play a role in future Stand Up and Cheer Fridays.
"We plan to have the mascot, along with members of our spirit squads and athletic teams, be very visible parts of the campaign," said Scott. "If they see someone wearing Bobcat gear, that person might be rewarded for their sprit. We really think this initiative includes some fun elements that people are going to enjoy, and when all is said and done, that is the goal. Be proud of Ohio University and being a Bobcat, and have some fun showing it."
The Bobcats open the 2006 season on Sept. 2 at Peden Stadium against Tennessee-Martin. For information on tickets and the new Bobcat Family Package, which includes two adult and two youth (ages 3-18) season tickets for $79, call the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-575-CATS.
