ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio Department of Athletics has announced that the Bobcat football team will resume its series with Marshall beginning in 2010. The six-game, home-and-home agreement will begin in Huntington, with games at Peden Stadium slated for 2011, 2013 and 2015.
The Bobcats and Thundering Herd have met 52 times since 1905 with Ohio holding a 29-17-6 all-time advantage in the series. The last meeting was on Oct. 9, 2004 at Peden Stadium during Marshall's final season in the Mid-American Conference. The last time the two teams played each other as non-conference opponents was in 1988.
"We're very excited to renew our football series with Marshall," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "This rivalry has a strong tradition, and the proximity of the two institutions creates a unique opportunity for fans to follow each game."
The "Battle for the Bell" was started in 1997. The trophy is a bronze bell, replicating those commonly found on riverboats that used to travel on the Ohio River. It is engraved with the score of each contest.
