Sept. 11, 2006
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior quarterback Austen Everson (Brentwood, Tenn.) was named the MAC East Division Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 11 for his performance in the Bobcats' 35-23 victory against Northern Illinois. Everson completed 23-of-31 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns, all career bests.
Everson became the first Ohio quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards in a game since Sam Vink had 310 versus Western Michigan in 1993. Everson's 322 yards were the most by a Bobcat since Dennis Swearingen passed for 355 against Ball State in 1985. His passing performance ranks sixth on the Ohio single-game ledger.
Everson also cracked Ohio's single-game top 10 in pass completions. His 23 completions are tied for eighth in school history with Ryan Hawk's 23-completion performance against Miami in 2004. Everson's 74.2 completion percentage is the sixth-best in school history among quarterbacks with at least 10 attempts, and the highest ever by a Bobcat with at least 30 attempts.
The Ohio signal caller also ran for 41 yards. His 363 yards of total offense were a career high and ranked fifth on the Ohio single-game ledger. Everson was particularly effective on third down, accounting for all 11 of Ohio's conversions. He was 9-for-12 passing on third down and reached the marker on two runs.
"Mainly, (the award) speaks to the whole offense," Everson said. "We were just doing things we wanted to do. When everything is working it makes a quarterback's job easy. It's more of an offensive award as a whole."
It is the second straight week that a Bobcat player has earned one of the MAC's weekly awards. Matt Lasher was the special teams player of the week in the East Division on Sept. 4. It is the second time in his career that Everson has been named the division's offensive award winner. He was honored after his collegiate debut against UCF in 2003.
Everson shared the award with Akron's Dennis Kennedy. Kennedy rushed for 117 yards, passed for 24, and was responsible for all three Akron touchdowns, including the game-winner with three seconds left, in a 20-17 win at N.C. State.
The Bobcats have road contests at Rutgers on Sept. 16 and Missouri on Sept. 23 before returning home to face Bowling Green on Sept. 30. For information on tickets, call the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-575-CATS.
