CLEVELAND, Ohio - Freshman punt returner Chris Garrett (Bristow, Va.) was named the MAC East Division Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance at Rutgers on Sept. 16. Garrett totaled 107 all-purpose yards on special teams, including 90 yards on three punt returns.
Garrett put his name in the Bobcat record book, averaging 30.0 yards per punt return. It was the fourth-highest average in school history among players with at least three returns in one game. Garrett's 90 total punt return yards were the ninth-best in school history. His longest return of the day was a career-best 62-yarder. The rookie also had his first career kickoff return for 17 yards.
For the season, Garrett leads the MAC and is ranked fourth in the nation in punt returns with a 26.8 yard average. Three of his five returns this season have gone for at least 26 yards. His 134 punt-return yards this season are just 32 yards shy of matching last season's punt-return leader Dion Byrum.
Garrett is the second Bobcat to win the East Division special-teams honor (Matt Lasher, Sept. 4). The Bobcats have had a player earn one of the three MAC weekly awards in each of the first three weeks (Austen Everson, Offense, Sept. 11).
The Bobcats have a road contest at Missouri on Sept. 23 before returning home to face Bowling Green on Sept. 30. For information on tickets, call the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-575-CATS.
