Short Story: The Ohio field hockey team (6-9, 3-2 MAC) played its first double overtime match of the year on Senior Day, but comes up short against the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Champion Kent State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
â¢ Just four minutes into the match, Kent Stateâs Ines Delpech found the back of the net against sophomore Ohio goalie Alex Pennington (Easton, Pa.) on a penalty corner putting the Golden Flashes up 1-0 early.
â¢ In the 23rd minute, graduate student Amelia Milton (Exton, Rutland, England) would put the Bobcats on the board with her second goal of the season.
â¢ The scoreboard read 1-1 at halftime. The Golden Flashes out-shot the Bobcats 4-2 and led the corner battle 5-2. Alex Pennington (Easton, Pa.) had three saves at the half.
â¢ Ultimately, both teams went back and forth trading shots and corners for the rest of regulation, forcing Ohioâs third overtime game of the season. Kent State lead in shots 10-4 and corners 8-3.
â¢ The first overtime period was filled with excitement as there were a total of eight shots and six corners.
â¢ Junior Maria Russell (Hudson, Ohio) almost ended the match with a goal in the first overtime, but the ball hit the post in the 78th minute and the scored remained tied.
â¢ Alex Pennington (Easton, Pa.) had one of the finest moments of her college career when she had four saves on five corner attempts, all with the clock at 0:00.
â¢ However, Kent Stateâs Madison Thompson put one past Pennington off of their 16th corner of the match to make to final score 2-1 Golden Flashes.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
â¢ Pennington records 17 saves, the most of her college career.
â¢ This was the first double overtime game of the year for the Bobcats.
