Short Story: The Ohio field hockey team (6-10, 3-2 MAC) falls to Michigan State (8-9, 3-4 Big Ten), 3-1, on Sunday (Oct. 23) in its final non-conference match of the season.


• Michigan State kicked off the scoring with a goal from Kelsey Keener just 30 seconds after sophomore Ohio goalkeeper Alex Pennington (Easton, Pa.) made the first save of the match to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
• Ohio’s penalty corner defense came up big when it defended five straight corners between the eighth and 10th minutes blocking two shots, forcing two shots wide and Pennington saving another.
• However, the Spartans tallied the second goal of the match after the great defensive play with Addie Donaldson putting them up 2-0.
• After 12 minutes if scoreless play and Michigan State saving a shot by redshirt sophomore Tatyana Nelson (San Diego, Calif.), Ohio answered with a goal its own by freshman Brittany Keen (Perth, Western Australia) off a corner play that saw sophomore Kendall Ballard (Charlottesville, Va.) dish her the ball in the 25th minute.
• Heading towards the end of the half, Pennington made another huge save off a corner opportunity to keep the Spartan lead at one heading into the half.
• Coming out the half, freshman Karynne Baker (Falls Church, Va.) fired a shot on goal that was saved by Michigan State keeper Katie Miller five minutes into the second half.
• Michigan State tallied its third goal of the match on Megan Fenton shot in the 45th minute.
• Pennington came up with three saves a few minutes later in just over a minute of game time to keep the Michigan State lead at 3-1.
• Fenton was a called for a yellow card in the final eight minutes, but Ohio could not find the back off the net on the player advantage and the match ended with Michigan State taking the match, 3-1.
• Pennington made 10 saves in the match.

• Pennington followed up a career-high 17 saves against Kent State (Oct. 21) with her second 10-save match of the week.
• Keen’s goal was her sixth of the season.
• Ballard recorded her fourth assist and 28th point of the 2016 campaign.
• Nelson has nine shots this season, including five on goal.

“We were outplayed today. We didn’t play our style of hockey and Michigan State imposed their style on us.” – 12th-year head coach Neil Macmillan on the match.

Ohio travels to Oxford, Ohio, to take on the Redhawks in its final Mid-American Conference and regular season match of the season next Saturday (Oct. 29). The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
