The Ohio field hockey team is set to host a clinic for kids of all ages after Friday's (Sept. 2) match against UC Davis.
12th-year head coach Neil Macmillan sees a need to have a clinic since there is not much of an opportunity for kids to play the sport in the Athens area.
"Unfortunately, field hockey isn't a big sport in this area. The nearest field hockey we have is in Lancaster, which is 45 minutes away. Then you have Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland which are the big hubs in the state. To offer something to get kids involved in the sport at a young age is something we tried to do," Macmillan said.
Macmillan also sees a benefit in having the clinic after a game. "I think it is excellent to tie it into a game to be able to showcase the talents of the team, and then have the local kids try the sport and try to emulate what they have just seen," Macmillan said.
The match between Ohio and UC Davis is set to start at 5 P.M. at Pruitt Field. The clinic will start after the match and last one hour. The event will also feature an autograph session and a bounce house during the post-game activities.
