CLEVELAND – The Ohio men's basketball team was selected to finish sixth in the East Division in the 2019-20 Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll, which was announced on Thursday (Oct. 31) by the league office.
In a vote, which was determined by the league's 12 head coaches, the Bobcats earned 12 points. Ohio was picked to finish behind Bowling Green, which earned 69 points and received nine first-place votes and Buffalo, which earned 58 points and three first place votes. Kent State received 43 points, while Miami eared 37 points with Akron receiving 33.
Toledo has been selected to win the MAC West Division after earning 69 points and receiving 11 first-place votes. Northern Illinois has been picked to finish second in the MAC West after earning 52 points, while Ball State was selected third with 51 points and earning one first-place vote. Rounding out the West was Central Michigan (41 points), Western Michigan (23 points) and Eastern Michigan (16 points).
The Falcons have been selected as the favorite to win the 2020 MAC Basketball Tournament with a conference-high six votes. Toledo (2), Buffalo (1), Kent State (1), Miami (1) and Northern Illinois (1) also received votes to capture the conference tournament crown. The 2020 MAC Basketball Tournament will be held at Rocket Mortgage Field House in Cleveland. This year's tournament will begin on March 9 with first round games on campus before moving to Cleveland (March 12-14). The tournament quarterfinal games will air on ESPN+, with the semifinals on CBS Sports Network, while the title game will be played on Saturday, March 14 on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m.
The Ohio men's basketball team enters their season under head coach Jeff Boals and will return MAC Freshman of the Year and MAC All-Freshman Team member Ben Vander Plas (Ripon, Wisc.), along with fellow All-Freshman Team member Jason Preston (Orlando, Fla.). Ohio will welcome seven newcomers to the roster: freshmen Ben Roderick (Columbus, Ohio), Marvin Price (Baltimore, Md.), Miles Brown (Rochester, N.Y.), Michael Brown, Jr. (Rochester, N.Y.), Lunden McDay (Akron, Ohio), Nolan Foster (Mattawan, Mich.) and graduate transfer Sylvester Ogbonda (Port Harcourt, Nigeria).
The Bobcats will be back in the Convocation Center on Saturday, Nov. 2 when the Bobcats host Capital for a Dad's Weekend exhibition game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. Ohio opens the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at St. Bonaventure. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Reilly Center and can be seen on ESPN+.
