ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio women's basketball team took to the court for one final tuneup before the start of 2017-18 season, falling 82-66 in an exhibition to Walsh on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the Convocation Center.
Freshman forward Alexis Stover (Solon, Ohio) tallied a team 17 points and added two assists along with a rebound. Stover knocked down three 3-pointers on the day. Freshman forward Erica Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) contributed a game-high 16 rebounds and four points, while dishing out four assists. Freshman forward Gabby Burris (Baltimore, Ohio) finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Cierra Hooks (Dayton, Ohio) chipped 12 points and six rebounds.
Ohio played all five of its freshman in the game and just two returners from last year's roster who saw minutes.
"We always try to get better as the season goes on," head coach Bob Boldon said. "We wanted a big period of time of film to watch some of the freshman. At least we were able to evaluate some of these kids for the first time. I'm anxious to watch the tape to see what we need to improve on.
Ohio outscored Walsh 38-32 in the paint and out rebounded the Cavaliers 12-9 on the offense.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 13-11 lead in the first quarter, taking control thanks to five points from Burris in the quarter. To start off the second quarter Ohio scored four straight points off of layups from Johnson and Burris, stretching the lead to 21-15.
At halftime, the Bobcats led 37-33.
The two teams exchanged baskets in the early part of the third quarter, but Walsh was able to regain the lead with 6:17 to go off of an three-point play. The Bobcats never led again.
"They need experience," Boldon said about his freshman. "They're playing some good players in practice, but you don't know how they'll do in a game. Just getting through a game and with timeouts. It was important for them to play today."
The Bobcats officially start the 2017-18 season against High Point at home in the Convo on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
