ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio Basketball team will add Duquesne graduate transfer Maddie Bazelak for the 2019-20 season, head coach Bob Boldon announced. Bazelak will have one season of eligibility remaining after spending four seasons on the Duquesne volleyball team.
"Maddie (Bazelak) is a winner and her competitiveness will fit seamlessly into our team culture," Boldon said. "She is a tremendous team player whose primary goal is team success."
In high school at Archbishop Alter, Bazelak was the 2015 Ohio Player of the Year and first-team All-Ohio in basketball. Bazelak was a three-time Greater Catholic League Player of the Year, and helped Alter win a state championship in 2015. That 2015 team was ranked No. 11 in the nation. Bazelak was a 1,000-point scorer at Alter and went 59-1 her junior and senior year. Her sister, Elizabeth, is a junior on the Duquesne basketball team.
"She is a two way player who can guard a number of positions as well as shoot the three," Boldon added. "We recruited Maddie when she was in high school and we are excited for Maddie to get to campus and start working with her to develop her game."
On the volleyball court, Bazelak recorded 743 kills and 748 digs in four seasons with the Dukes. She had a career-high 269 kills in 2016 and 150 or more in her final three seasons. Bazelak had 225 or more digs in her final three seasons.
Bazelak graduated with an education degree from Duquesne and will pursue a coaching education graduate degree at Ohio. Bazelak was a dean's list member and Atlantic-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll member in her time at Duquesne.
