ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio womenâs basketball team held its first official practice of the 2016-17 season on Tuesday (Oct. 4) under the lead of fourth-year coach Bob Boldon at the Convocation Center.
After winning the Mid-American Conference Regular season and Tournament titles in 2014-15, Boldon led Ohio to a regular season MAC title in 2015-16 and earned a berth in the WNIT. Ohio earned its first ever post season victories during their WNIT run, defeating Marshall 76-68 in round one and Virginia Tech 64-57 in round two until eventually losing to Temple in the Round of Sixteen.
âWinning,â Boldon said about the challenge this yearâs team faces. âDealing with the expectations of winning. Having a senior class that has tasted the postseason and the NCAA Tournament and trying to figure out how to get back there.â
Ohio returns 11 players from last yearâs squad, redshirt freshman guard Katie Barker (Cary, Ill.), senior guard Quiera Lampkins (Gahanna, Ohio), sophomore guard Dominique Doseck (Athens, Ohio), redshirt sophomore forward Kelly Karlis (Medinah, Ill.), senior guard Yamonie Jenkins (Reynoldsburg, Ohio), sophomore forward Olivia Bower (Bowerston, Ohio), senior forward Jasmine Weatherspoon (Columbus, Ohio), senior forward Tmisht Stinson (Hattiesburg, Miss.), redshirt freshman forward Hannah Thome (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), senior forward Hannah Boesinger (Hudson, Ohio) and sophomore forward Kendall Jessing (Sylvania, Ohio).
âLong offseason, just not being able to play a game,â Lampkins said. âJust going up and down has been a process. Just rebuilding the team, we lost a couple of great players from last year, so everyone is just trying to find their roles. Itâs been long, but itâs been fun.â
Lampkins averaged 14.8 points per game, leading the team with 124 assists, averaging 3.8 per game. Lampkins was also named the MAC Defensive Player of the year, as well as named Second Team All-MAC and All-MAC Defensive Team.
Ohio adds to freshmen to the roster, guard Amani Burke and guard Mecheâla Cobb. Along with two new freshmen, Taylor Agler will return to the hardwood for the first time in over a year after sitting out last year due to a transfer redshirt.
"I'm just hoping to fit in with the team, just be a good asset in whatever way they need me,â Agler said about being able to play after a long wait. âWhether that's passing or scoring or just a leadership role, whatever. I just want to help fill in the empty gaps."
Ohioâs 2016-17 schedule opens with an exhibition game on Nov. 5. The Bobcats host Thomas More in the Convocation Center at 11:30 a.m. The regular season will begin on Sunday, Nov. 13 at High Point, with the first regular home game scheduled for Nov. 18 against Tennessee-Martin.
MAC play starts Jan. 4 against Buffalo at home.
