ATHENS, Ohio –Three members of the Ohio women's golf team were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference, the league announced today. Senior Lily Pendy and juniors Emily Hughes and Nicole Smiley all earned the honor.
This is the third time that Pendy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) has been named Academic All-MAC. Pendy, a Communication Studies and Social Media major, sports a 3.585 GPA. Pendy played in all nine events for Ohio during the season, she registered 1,951 strokes in 25 rounds to register a 78.04 average.
At the 2018 MAC Championships, Pendy finished tied for 24th place, finishing with a 238 (+22). Pendy's highest finish came at the 2017 KZoo Classic where she finished the tournament in sixth place. She finished the first and third rounds with a 75, while shooting a second-round score of 77, giving her a three-round score of 227 (+11). Pendy finished the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational tied for 12th place. While there, she shot a 79 in the first round and came back for a second day score of 74. She wrapped up the tournament with a 76 to finish with a 229 (+13).
Pendy's lowest round of the season came at the Rio Verde Invitational where in the second round, she shot a season-low of 72, helping her finish the tournament tied for 16th place after posting a final score of 227 (+11). Pendy finished the season with three top-20 performances and six top-50 performances. Pendy was also named the MAC Sportswomen of the Year at the end of the season.
This is the second time that Hughes (Columbus, Ohio), is a Sport Management and Finance major who registers a 3.452 GPA, has been named Academic All-MAC. Hughes played in all nine events for the Bobcats, registering 1,796 strokes in 23 rounds for a 78.08 stroke average.
Her best finish was at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational where she won the individual championship with an overall score of 144 (E), the lowest 36-hole total of her career. In that same tournament, Hughes shot a career-low 67 in the second round. At the 2018 MAC Championships, Hughes was the highest-finishing Bobcats, concluding the competition in 23rd place with an overall score of 237 (+21).
This season, Hughes registered seven top-50 performances and two top-20 performances and one Top-5. Hughes finished tied for 18th place at the 2018 Spring Break Shoot out March 12-13 where she opened play with a 74 in the first round, a 76 in round two and concluded the tournament with an 80 for overall total of 230 (+14), finishing her as the low Bobcat at the tournament. Hughes also opened the season strong, finishing the Redbird Invitational in 26th place after finishing the tournament +19 (235). Hughes was also named the MAC Golfer of the Week on April 16 for the first time in her career.
This is Smiley's (Dublin, Ohio) second time being named Academic All-MAC. Smiley, a Marketing and Sales major with a 3.285 GPA, finished the season with 1,858 strokes in 24 rounds for a 77.41 stroke average, the lowest on the Bobcat squad during the season. At the 2018 MAC Championships, Smiley finished tied for 26th place after finishing to tournament with a total of 239 (+23).
Smiley shot a low round of 71 in the Nittany Lion Invitational. Smiley's highest finish came at the KZoo Classic where she finished tied for third place after going 76+77+72 to finish the tournament with a 225 (+9). Her next highest finish was at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational where she finished tied for sixth place after shooting a 75 and a 75 to finish +7 (151). Her next highest finish came at the Nittany Lion Invitational where she finished tied for 8th place. In the first round she shot a 74, followed that up with a 73 and then concluded that with a 71 for a grand total of 218 (+2). Smiley's finish of 218 is the lowest three-round total of her career. Smiley has finished in the top-10 three times and in the top-50 seven times.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
