Three Ohio Women’s Golf Members Named Academic All-MAC

CLEVELAND, Ohio– Three members of the Ohio women's golf teamed were named to the 2019 Academic All-MAC Team, the league announced today (June 3). Seniors Emily Hughes, Nicole Smiley and Chloe McKinzie all earned the honor. 

Hughes (Columbus, Ohio), a Sport Management major, was named Academic All-MAC for the third time in her career. Hughes finished the season with a 76.07 overall stroke average, placing her fifth in the MAC. Through 27 rounds, Hughes registered 2,054 strokes, while shooting a low round of 70 in the third round of the Cardinal Classic on Sept. 18. Hughes was also crowned the individual champion at the 2019 Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on April 7. It is the second-straight year that Hughes has won the tournament. Hughes finished the tournament with an overall score of 146 (+2) after shooting a 72 on day one and a 74 on day two. Hughes finished the season with four top-10 finishes for the Bobcats. Hughes also finished in ninth place at the 2018 Redbird Classic to open the season, and then finished in eighth place at the 2018 Cardinal Classic, scoring a 225 and 223, respectively. Hughes was also named the MAC Golfer of the Week on April 11. At the 2019 MAC Championships, Hughes finished in 14th place and was Ohio's top performer. Hughes opened the day shooting a 72, and then recorded a final round score of 75 later in the day, giving her a two-day total of 225 (+9).

McKinzie (Medina, Ohio), a Journalism and Strategic Communications major, finished the season with an 81.68 stroke average, playing in six events for the Bobcats. Over the course of 16 rounds, McKinzie recorded 1,307 strokes, while recording a low-round of 77 in the second round of the 2018 Fall MAC Preview. 

Smiley (Dublin, Ohio), a marketing major, sees herself on the Academic All-MAC team for the third time as well. Smiley finished the season with a 76.26 stroke average, placing her sixth in the MAC. In 27 rounds, Smiley registered 2,059 strokes. Smiley shot a personal career low of 69 in the second round of the Lady Colonel Classic. During the same tournament, Smiley finished tied for second place after shooting a 54-hole best, 216 to finish even par at the event. Smiley was named the MAC Golfer of the Week on April 4 for her performance at the Lady Colonel Classic. Then a at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, Smiley finished in second place for the second-straight tournament. Smiley finished with a first-round score of 73 before finished the tournament with a 74, giving her a two-round total of 147 (+3). Smiley finished with two top-10 finishes and five top-20 performances for the Bobcats this season.  Smiley finished the 2019 MAC Championships in 26th place. 

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
