MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – Ohio RS sophomore Kade Kowalski advanced to the finals at 149-pounds at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships at Central Michigan Saturday.
Kowalski picked up wins over Kent State's Chance Driscoll, 2-0 decision, and Northern Illinois' Nolan Baker, 11-2 major decision, to advance to the finals.
Kowalski, who entered the competition as the No. 3 seed, will face off against top-seeded Grant Leeth of Missouri. Leeth is ranked No. 3 nationally and owns a 21-2 record. He earned his way to the finals via a 10-2 major decision and a 6-5 decision.
As a team, Ohio wrapped up day one in a tie for sixth in the MAC team championship race with 69.5 points.
Along with Kowalski, Ohio had four other wrestlers advance to the semifinals via winning their opening round matchups.
Junior Cameron Kelly picked up a tech fall over Central Michigan's Dresden Simon at 133-pounds but dropped his semifinal match to Bryan Lantry via major decision, 16-4.
RS freshman Mario Guillen picked up a 9-5 decision win over Kent State's Tim Rooney at 141-pounds. Guillen lost via fall to Missouri's Jaydin Eierman in the semifinals.
Freshman 197-pounder Aaron Naples picked up a decision win over Kyle Conel from Kent State via decision, 8-7. Naples lost via tech fall to Missouri's William Miklus
RS junior heavyweight Zak Parker picked up a decision over Ali Wahab of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals but dropped a hard-fought decision to Gage Hutchinson of Eastern Michigan in the semifinals, 4-3.
After dropping their opening round matches, RS senior Cullen Cummings and RS freshman Hunter Yeargan won their wrestle-back matches to stay alive in the championship. Cummings, a 157-pounder, dropped his opening match to Central Michigan's Colin Hefferman by major decision, 12-3. Cummings bounced-back to beat Buffalo's Eric Fasnacht by a 6-2 decision.
Yeargan dropped his opening match to Jordan Ellingwood from Central Michigan by 3-0 decision. Yeargan bounced back to pin Antonio Agee from Old Dominion.
Action resumes at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with Championship matches beginning at 1 p.m.
