CLEVELAND, Ohio – Redshirt senior Cullen Cummings (Woodridge, Ill.), redshirt freshman Trevor Giallombardo (Gaylord, Mich.), redshirt sophomore Kade Kowalski (Nashport, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Joe Terry (Pickerington, Ohio) represented the Ohio wrestling team by earning spots on the 2018 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Monday (April 2).
A total of 39 student-athletes were named to the team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
This is the first Academic All-MAC honor for each Cummings, Giallombardo, and Terry while this year's recognition marks as the second for Kowalski.
A Master of Business Administration candidate, Cummings has maintained a 3.668 GPA. The redshirt senior finished the 2017-18 season with a 10-16 record in the 157-class. The redshirt senior has recorded 8 decision wins along with one major decision and one tech fall victory on the season. Cummings' 16-0 technical fall win came over VMI's Robert DuPont in 4:47 to help lead the Bobcats to a 37-6 road victory.
A Biological Sciences Pre-Professional major, Giallombardo currently has a 3.472 GPA. Giallombardo finished the 2017-18 season with a 4-15 record in the 125-class. Giallombardo recorded two decision wins and one major decision victory. At the 2017 Hokie Open, Giallombardo garnered a 9-8 decision win over Virginia Tech's Ryan More early in the season.
With a 3.697 GPA as an MIS Business major, redshirt sophomore Kowalski finished the 2017-18 season with a 10-11 record in the 149-class. Kowalski recorded 3 major decision wins, 5 decision victories, one tech fall victory and one fall victory. In Ohio's bout with Eastern Michigan, Kowalski took a fall victory in 2:45 over EMU's Kyle Springer. After a reset at 1:15 remaining, Kowalski hit the takedown and got a near fall before ultimately pinning Springer to take the match.
A Biological Sciences Pre-Professional major, Terry has maintained a 3.384 GPA and finished the 2017-18 season with a 13-13 record in the 184 weight-class. Terry recorded 12 decision wins along with one major decision victory on the season. Terry recorded an impressive 12-6 decision over Buffalo's Cameron Calderelli in the 2017 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open this season.
