ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio wrestling team will ring in the New Year by competing in the 2019 Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear, which will held Jan. 1-2 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. Action gets underway at 10 a.m. ET both days.
This year marks the 15th edition of the Southern Scuffle, which is billed as the top in-season collegiate wrestling tournament in the nation. The event took place in Greensboro, N.C. from 2003-10 before moving to Chattanooga.
The Southern Scuffle features an extremely competitive field which includes four teams ranked in this week's National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Top 25 Poll -- No. 1 Penn State, No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Lock Haven and No. 23 Iowa State. Other teams participating include Air Force, Appalachian State, Binghamton, Cal State Bakersfield, The Citadel, Columbia, Drexel, Duke, Edinboro, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Navy, Northern Colorado, Rider and Stanford. All totaled, there will be 19 All-Americans, four NCAA Champions, 50 wrestlers currently ranked in the top 20 and 25 ranked in the top 10.

Redshirt junior Shakur Laney (Canal Winchester, Ohio) is the highest-seeded Bobcat at the Southern Scuffle, earning a No. 5 seed at 125 pounds. Laney is 4-3 overall on the season, boasting two major decision wins and one victory by fall.
Ohio last competed on Dec. 20 at the Convocation Center in Athens, defeating Chattanooga by a score of 22-19. A pin by redshirt freshman Alec Hagan (Eureka, Mo.) at 149 and a two-point victory by redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio) at 157 helped the Bobcats overcome the Mocs. Also earning wins for Ohio were freshman Colt Yinger (Nelsonville, Ohio) by a 12-4 major decision at 165, redshirt sophomore Joe Terry (Pickerington Ohio) by an 8-5 decision at 174, redshirt junior Nate Hall (Lewis Center, Ohio) by an 8-3 decision at 197 and redshirt senior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) by a 3-1 decision at 285.
After the Southern Scuffle, Ohio will begin the Mid-American Conference portion of its 2019 slate, playing host to six-time defending league champion Missouri on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. ET at the Convo. The Bobcats will continue to celebrate 100 years of wrestling at Ohio, welcoming back MAC champions from the 1950s, '60s, '70s and '80s. The matchup between the Bobcats and the Tigers will be streamed live on ESPN+.
