Four Ohio Wrestlers Headed To 2019 NCAA Championships

NCAA Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four members of the Ohio wrestling team are headed to the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Redshirt junior Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Mario Guillen (Perrysburg, Ohio), senior Cameron Kelly (Bellbrook, Ohio) and redshirt senior Zack Parker (Felton, Del.) will represent the Bobcats at nationals, which will be held March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

Kelly (141 pounds) and Parker (285 pounds) were among 285 student-athletes that qualified automatically through their conference tournament finishes last weekend. Kelly placed third in his weight class at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championships last Saturday (March 9) in Norfolk, Va., while Parker placed fourth and won a challenge match to punch his ticket to Pittsburgh. Kelly is slated to make his second-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships and third overall while Parker qualified for the second time in his career.

Carson (157 pounds) and Guillen (133 pounds) were among 45 at-large selections for nationals, as announced by the NCAA today. The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and conference tournament finish. Carson finished sixth in his weight class at the MAC Championships while Guillen claimed fourth. Carson is making his second-straight NCAA Championship appearance and first as a Bobcat. He was an at-large selection at 165 pounds for Eastern Michigan last year before transferring to Ohio after EMU dropped its wrestling program. Guillen is set to make his first NCAA Championship appearance.
