ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio women's soccer team kicked off the 2016 season with an exhibition game against Northern Kentucky at Chessa Field on Monday afternoon, defeating the Norse 2-1.

The Norse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period when NKU's Jessica Frey scored in the 20th minute when she kicked a ball from close to left the wing into the upper right corner.

The Bobcats fought back when junior Hannah Jaggers (Taylorsville, Ky.) tallied an unassisted goal past the Norse goalkeeper for Ohio in the 58th minute to tie-up the game at 1-1.

The Norse were aggressive on defense but could not stop a goal by freshman Remi Eades (New Albany, Ohio) on a shot from the top of the box on an empty net on an assist by Jaggers.

"I've had a kind of slow off-season, it's been a little rough for me so having this goal definitely helps." Eades said. "It gives me some more confidence and a boost to keep going. It felt amazing."

NKU was unable to score in the last 21 minutes, resulting in an Ohio victory.

“It's really exciting because we have a lot of new players and a lot of freshmen that have a lot of talent.” Alexis Milesky said. “It feels great to know that no matter who you’re playing with on the field, they're going to bring the same level of play, and I think that's something we've never had before.”

Overall, Ohio outshot the Norse 16 to 14, with Jaggers reregistering five, Eades with three, while both junior Bryce Hueber (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Mollie Whitacre (Perrysburg, Ohio) recorded two shots on the day. Alexis Milesky, Sydney Leckie, Alivia Milesky and Macey Juguilon all added one shot to Ohio's total.

“We installed a little bit different shape, a little bit different style and we grew in that process.” head coach Aaron Rodgers said. “Just giving the freshmen an opportunity to play and to have some contribute quite well, Remi's goal was phenomenal and it gives her confidence and it gives the team confidence in her as well. It gives the other freshman confidence in themselves that they played and contributed to a good result for our team."

The Bobcats registered a total of three corner kicks.

Junior Vanessa Cordoba (Bogota, Cudinamarca, Colombia), sophomore Erin Beurket (Milford, Ohio) and sophomore Taylor Smith (Uniontown, Ohio) added minutes in goal for Ohio. Cordoba tallied five saves and allowed one goal while Beurket and Smith both recorded a single save, allowing no goals.

Up next, the Bobcats are set to travel to Valparaiso on Friday (Aug. 12th) at 12 p.m. for a second exhibition game before the 2016 regular season begins on Aug. 19 at Butler.
