ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio women’s soccer team has added Sara Kattainen out of Tampere, Finland to the program for the 2017 season, head coach Aaron Rodgers announced today.
Kattainen was a regular member of the Finland U16, 17, 18 national teams. Kattainen was named assistant captain on the U16 Finnish National Team where the team earned a third place finish in the women’s Nordic Cup in 2013. She was also the region all-star match captain in 2014. While playing for her club team, FC Honka, she was Finnish Women’s Cup champion in 2015 and runner up in 2016.
“We are very excited to add someone of Sara’s quality and experience to the 2017 class,” Rodgers said. “Sara has a great deal of international experience along with senior women’s team experience. Sara has a great personality and maturity that is in line with our goals of growing the student athletes character on and off the field. She should add a great deal to our program and in our journey to a MAC championship.”
Kattainen, a native of Finland, medaled in the youth League in 2012-14, earning bronze in 2012 and silver in 2013 and 2014.
Kattainen played for Ilves club team in Finland under head coach Ville Väisänen. Kattainen also played for club teams HJS, VJS and FC Honka. Kattainen received various team accomplishments in her years playing club.
“It has always been a dream of mine to study and play soccer in the United States and she is excited to join the team in this coming August,” Kattainen said.
The daughter of Jari and Sirpa, Sara has two sisters, Mari and Katri. She plans on majoring in pre-med and aspires to become a doctor one day.
