Ohio Track & Field Turns In Strong Performances At Cherry Blossom Invitational

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio track & field team hosted the annual Cherry Blossom Invitational today at Goldsberry Track at Pruitt Field, with the Bobcats producing a number of solid performances on a day in which the program celebrated its 2019 senior class.

Ohio's throwers turned in several strong marks. The Bobcats claimed the top three spots in the discus throw, with freshman Autumn Mohan (Chillicothe, Ohio) taking first with a 45.83-meter throw, senior Gaza Odunaiya (Athens, Ohio) finishing second with a throw of 44.59 meters and freshman Rachel Simpson (Port Clinton, Ohio) taking third with a 40.55-meter toss. Mohan also took first in the shot put with a mark of 13.20 meters. Odunaiya won the hammer throw courtesy of a mark of 58.56 meters. Redshirt freshman Emma Russ (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) took second with a toss of 48.88 meters. The javelin throw saw Ohio claim the top two spots, with junior Tajah Haley (Washington, Pa.) winning it with a toss of 41.78 meters and sophomore Sophia Yantko (Belle Vernon, Pa.) claiming second with a 38.68-meter throw. 

The Bobcats accounted for the top-two marks in the long jump, with sophomore Dominique Miller (Mayfield Heights, Ohio) taking first at 5.13 meters and freshman Halie Sciury (East Sparta, Ohio) finishing second at 4.81 meters.

The Bobcats started strong on the track in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with freshman Jocelyn Knauss (Strongsville, Ohio) taking first with a time of 12:05.47. Sophomore Meredith Elstun (Fairfield, Ohio) finished second in 12:42.66.

Ohio's 4x100-meter relay team of redshirt senior Courtney Guiley (Louisville, Ohio), sophomore Olivia Brewer (Mount Gilead, Ohio), redshirt freshman Abigail Summers (Powell, Ohio) and senior Thelma Agyekum (Delaware, Ohio) took first in 49.17.

In the 1500-meter run, redshirt freshman Jessica Hartman (Lebanon, Ohio) clocked a 5:02.03 to win it and set a personal best while junior Emily Cass (Athens, Ohio) claimed second in 5:18.86.

The 400-meter dash saw Emily Deering (Geneva, Ohio) win in 59.23.

The Bobcats took the top-five spots in the 100-meter dash. Summers won in 12.39, Brewer finished second in 12.55, redshirt junior Erin Stewart (Chardon, Ohio) placed third in 12.67, Agyekum took fourth in 12.86 and Guiley claimed fifth in 13.08.

Ohio also claimed each of the top-five spots in the 800-meter run. Redshirt junior Melissa Koziol (Burton, Ohio) finished first in 2:17.26. Freshman Stephanie Pierce (Fairborn, Ohio) took second in 2:17.59. Senior Josie Woosley (Pataskala, Ohio) claimed third in 2:18.13. Freshman Peyton Grigsby (Wadsworth, Ohio) crossed the finish line in 2:23.64 to finish fourth. Junior Marissa Handel (Highland Heights, Ohio) clocked a 2:23.67 for fifth.

The Bobcats swept the top-four places in the 200-meter dash, with Summers winning in 25.41, Stewart taking second in 25.81, Handel placing third in 26.36 and Brewer finishing fourth in 26.37.

The Cherry Blossom Invitational concluded with Ohio winning the 4x400-meter relay courtesy of Woosley, redshirt senior Shannon Kilbane (Lakewood, Ohio), Grigsby and Pierce teaming up to clock a 4:28.18.

Ohio will be back in action April 12-13 in Charlotte, N.C., at the Charlotte Invitational.
