ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio volleyball team (3-5) picked up its first victory of the weekend, knocking off the Samford Bulldogs (2-4), 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-22, 27-25,15-11), this morning (Sept. 7) in their first match of the 2018 Bobcat Invitational presented by Texas Roadhouse, inside the Convocation Center.
Redshirt Junior middle blocker Simone Miller (Kalamazoo, Mich.) took the offensive challenge with dominance leading the team in attack percentage .875 after two sets of play with seven kills on eight attempts, hitting 1.000 in set two. Miler recorded a team-high eight assisted blocks and finished the match with 14 kills on 20 attempts (.650), second in kills for the Bobcats. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) also recorded 14 kills, hitting .170. Kosiorek, who also recorded six aces, moved into second all-time in program history in career aces with 131.
Redshirt senior right-side hitter Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) led the team in kills with 16 hitting .256 and added six block assists. Sophomore setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) distributed a team-high 32 assists while freshman setter Kyra Slavik (Saint Charles, Ill.) handed out 19. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Macy Reihing (Lexington, Ky.) recorded a career-high 33 digs. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Dahlias Bouyer (Brownstown, Mich.) recorded her first career kill against the Bulldogs, finishing the match hitting .500 in her Bobcat debut.
After a six-point Bobcat run to tie the opening set 24-24, the Bulldogs took set one 27-25 and squeaked out a tight second set battle 26-24. After the break, the Bobcats came out strong for a three-point win in the third and a two-point win after the Bobcats and the Bulldogs fought to a 25-all tie in the fourth. An ace by Kosiorek, followed by a Bulldog hitting error gave Ohio the fourth set win. The Bobcats started off strong with a 4-1 lead and finished strong for a 15-11 fifth set win.
Junior right-side hitter Kelsie Hobbs led the Bulldogs in kills with 20 hitting .260 followed by senior outside hitter Krista Boesing, named to the Southern Conference preseason All-Conference team this 2018 season for Samford with 14 kills. Senior setter Taylor Anderton led the match with 54 assists for the Bulldogs. Junior defensive specialist/libero Grace Tiesman compiled a team-high 28 digs.
Up next, a quick turnaround for Ohio as they return to the Convocation Center this evening for their second match of the 2018 Bobcat Invitational presented by Texas Roadhouse against Virginia Tech at 7:30 pm ET. It will also be the Turn it Gold match, raising awareness for childhood cancer.
