COLUMBIA, Mo -- The Ohio volleyball team (5-8) dictated from the service line to sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-12), 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21), this afternoon in its final match of the Mizzou Invitational at the Hearnes Center.
With a victory over the Islanders, the Bobcats clinched a third-place finish in the Mizzou Invitational after going 1-2 on the weekend. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) earned a spot on the All-Mizzou Invitational Team.
Junior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas) led the Bobcats with a match-high 13 kills on 25 attempts, finishing the match hitting .440 while adding two service aces. Kosiorek registered nine kills on 23 attempts, finishing the match hitting .391 while compiling a match-high six service aces for the Bobcats. Redshirt senior right side hitter Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) chipped in seven kills and three block assists. Sophomore setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) registered her second double-double of the Mizzou Invitational and third of the season, recording a match-high 28 assists and a match-high 11 digs to lead Ohio while also contributing two block assists and three service aces. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Macy Reihing (Lexington, Kentucky) recorded seven digs.
Kosiorek registered three consecutive service aces to give the Bobcats an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. Ohio attacked aggressively from the net and the service line, tallying two more service aces and 10 kills. Stephens provided five of the 10 Bobcat kills to help Ohio close out the opening set with a 25-19 win.
Kosiorek quickly tallied four kills in the second set, bringing Ohio and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a tie at 11. Kosiorek and Stephens combined for five of seven Bobcat kills that brought Ohio to a 23-22 lead. An attacking error by the Islanders followed by a service ace from junior libero/defensive specialist Meredith Howe (Grand Rapids, Mich) gave Ohio a 25-22 second-set win.
The Islanders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in set three before Kosiorek responded with two consecutive service aces after a redshirt junior middle blocker Simone Miller (Kalamazoo, Mich) kill that tied the score at three apiece. The Islanders and the Bobcats found the score tied again at 10 and at 16 apiece. Ohio attacking viciously from the service line added two more service aces from Giacomazzi and Kosiorek in the final seven points of the third set for a Bobcat 25-21 set win and sweep of the Islanders.
Freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Sam Dumity led the Islanders with nine kills, hitting .304, followed by both junior right side hitter/setter Madison Green and freshman middle blocker Rachel Young, who each registered eight kills. Green also tallied a team-high 22 assists for the Islanders. Freshman setter Angel Felan compiled a team-high eight digs with freshman defensive specialist/libero Liza Buzhanski and freshman defensive specialist/libero Kaylee Payne both adding six digs apiece.
Ohio opens up Mid-American Conference play next Thursday (Sept. 20) against East Division rival Kent State in a 7 p.m. EST matchup at the Convocation Center in Athens. The Bobcats will then close out the first weekend of league action with a trip to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to square off against West Division foe Central Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 7 p.m.
